Weil der Mechanismus ziemlich kompliziert ist (s. PDF) und nur als Nebenreaktion abläuft. Es soll wohl durch Umsetzung von 21 mit Trimethylorthoformiat und Säure möglicherweise besser gehen, das werde ich noch testen. Ganz allgemein sind bei Porphyrinsynthesen die Ausbeuten aber sehr schlecht, was einerseits an der meist hohen Reaktivität der Pyrrol-Ausgangsstoffe liegt, andererseits daran, dass die Bildung eines 16-gliedrigen Makrocyclus nicht allzu leicht ist (man bedenke die möglichen Konformere eines offenkettigen tetrapyrrolischen Zwischenprodukts, die zum größten Teil mit anderen offenkettigen Oligopyrrolen längere Ketten bilden können, während nur eine Konformation tatsächlich beide Enden nah genug beieinander hat dass es zum Ringschluss kommen kann).

Probe des Dipyrrylmethans, diesmal ausgehend von 80 g Knorrs Pyrrol (statt 600 g) erhalten in einer Ausbeute von 2,08 g (statt 6,74 g). Diese 2,3-fach höhere Ausbeute liegt einerseits an der katalytischen Hydrierung der Propensäure statt Verwendung von Natriumamalgam, andererseits am Auslassen der meisten Umkristallisationen. Für diesen Ansatz habe ich nur die Pyrrolpropensäure und das Dipyrrylmethan umkristallisiert und alle anderen Zwischenstufen roh weiterverwendet. Das schadet den Reaktionen oder der Reinheit des Endprodukts nicht.
